There are more than 3500 abused and neglected children in Cuyahoga County's child welfare system. Child and Family Advocates of Cuyahoga County gives a voice and hope to children through volunteers. There is a great need for volunteers. Those who give their time may benefit, as well.

CASA are appointed by the court to advocate for the best interests of children who have been abused or neglected, in court and other settings. Children range from newborn to 18 years old.  The primary responsibilities of a CASA are to gather information, visit children at their homes, file court reports, recommend services, and appear in court to advocate for the child.

By intervening and helping to save a child from a life of abuse and neglect, CASAs provide a safe alternative to the cycle of victims becoming abusers and passing on the heredity of violence. CASAs provide abused and neglected children with an advocate who is committed to and solely focused on that child's welfare.

In addition to giving back to the community, CASAs also experience benefits in their own lives from volunteering:

  • Enjoying a sense of purpose and fulfillment
  • Utilize life experience and skills
  • Increase self-awareness
  • Expand communication and critical thinking
  • Develop a fellowship with others in the community
  • Ongoing training opportunities

Attorney GAL- Don Howard
